New COSEWIC Designations for Three Bat Species

COSEWIC assessment and status report on the Hoary Bat, Eastern Red Bat, and Silver-haired Bat, in Canada

The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) recently released an assessment and status report, detailing the designation of three bat species as Endangered under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA). As of May 2023, Hoary Bat, Eastern Red Bat, and Silver-haired Bat are designated as Endangered, joining the growing list of at-risk bat species in Canada. While not presently designated under the provincial Endangered Species Act (ESA), federal designation may signal a similar move by the province in the future.
